After more than 20 years of practicing pediatric dentistry, I still love seeing the smiles of all of our families and kids. Knowing that I am able to help them learn to enjoy their dental experience is very rewarding.
I love that the kids make me smile and laugh every day. They always teach me something new and are not embarrassed by their honesty. I've heard some funny things over the years! They keep me young at heart and always on my toes!
Being a pediatric dentist is more than just a profession. When a little one trusts and feels safe with me, they’re more open to listening to what I have to teach and more likely to develop better practices. I feel like it is important to truly listen to the kids as well, especially during this important time in their development. Sometimes they just need an ear to hear them.
My Education and Experience
Dentistry is a field that balances challenges and rewards. That, combined with my love of children and chatty nature, makes pediatric dentistry the perfect fit for me!
Originally from Des Moines, I attended Northeast Missouri State University, now called Truman State University, for my Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. I continued on to the University of Iowa College of Dentistry for my Doctorate of Dental Surgery, followed by my Pediatric Dentistry Certification from Temple University Hospital, Episcopal Division.
I attend multiple continuing education lectures throughout the year to maintain and improve my knowledge and skills. In addition to being involved with the G.V. Black Dental Study Club, I am an active member of the:
- American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
- Iowa Association of Pediatric Dentistry
- American Dental Association
- Iowa Dental Association
- Des Moines District Dental Society
Outside the Office
My husband is Dr. Andrew Chan, an endodontist in Des Moines. He grew up in NYC, but is truly an Iowan now. Our daughter Claire loves her pointe ballet and will graduate from Ankeny High School in 2027. Our last family member is our four-year-old Siberian kitty, Mittens. She is the one who is in charge of the family!
In my free time, I love to spend time with my family and friends. We love to be outside and participate in activities like swimming, biking, and hiking when the Iowa winters allow. I also enjoy baking and playing card and board games.
