Meet Dr. Matthew Pyfferoen

Creating positive relationships with kids is my goal: I want my patients to feel secure and respected, and for each to know I am here for them and personally care about their well-being. I truly love helping a nervous kid work through his or her fears —offering lots of encouragement and praise for a positive appointment — and equally love being able to get a child out of pain. Most of all, I love establishing early oral health and comfort in the dental office.

It is fulfilling to promote children’s oral health as part of their overall wellness. I strive to develop partnerships with parents by working together as the child grows. As a father, I understand a parent’s desires and concerns. I welcome the opportunity to establish open communication in order to answer a family’s questions, address issues, and ensure they have the information needed to make informed decisions about their child’s oral health.

Spending my days with children — each with their own warm, spontaneous, and ever-growing personality — is an honor. I value my patients for who they are, and who they are becoming, and care for each as I would my own child.

Education and Experience

Before becoming a pediatric dentist, I completed a Bachelor of Science in dietetics at Iowa State University. I worked as a registered dietitian for several years before deciding to return to school and pursue my dental degree and specialty training.

I was awarded my Doctorate of Dental Surgery by the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. This was followed by a rigorous two-year specialty training in pediatric dentistry. This postdoctoral program focused on the unique oral health concerns of children, behavior management, and addressing the needs of children with developmental and other concerns.

In the more than ten years since completing my specialty training, I have had the honor of meeting and caring for many remarkable children. Each has brightened my life, provided a lot of laughter and excitement, and encouraged me to constantly grow and adapt to their needs.

Constant Learning and Professional Affiliations

Pediatric dentistry is a steadily advancing specialty. Through continuing education, I stay current on the latest developments and best practices. Learning new information enhances the services I provide and ensures I offer the best treatment for positive experiences.

I currently work as an adjunct assistant clinical professor at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, teaching dental students and residents.

I am board certified by and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and an active member of the:

Beyond the Office

Family is my priority when I’m not seeing patients. My wife and I have three boys and we spend many hours outdoors, enjoying hiking, kayaking, and biking adventures. We enjoy supporting our sons’ many interests and activities, too, and treasure our time with friends and extended family.

Virtual Consultation

Upload a few images of your teeth and we'll propose a preliminary treatment plan ASAP. No appointment necessary.

Get Started

Say cheese!

Before we can recommend a treatment plan, we need to take a peek at your teeth. Let’s warm up with a head-on selfie. Bite down on your back teeth and smile as wide as you can! Do your best to match the photo at the top.

Left side

Great shot! Next up, we need to see your smile from the left side. Still biting down on your back teeth, pull your cheek back either with your fingers or using a spoon. Do your best to match the photo at the top.

Right side

These are coming out great! Let's try the same shot, this time from the right. Make sure you're biting down on your back teeth! Do your best to match the photo at the top.

Upper teeth

Next up, we need to see your upper teeth from below. Open wide! You may want to enlist the help of a friend for this one. Do your best to match the photo at the top.

Bottom teeth

Almost done: just one shot left! This time, we need to see your lower teeth. Once you've taken all of your photos, click Request Consult to send your shots to our doctor!
